Jewelry Spotlight: Vanishing Heirlooms
Vanishing Heirlooms is an antique and vintage jewelry business based out of Baton Rouge! It is inherently an e-commerce business, but Charel Kennedy brings her gorgeous jewelry to gift markets, trunk shows and pop-up shops (including one next Wednesday)!
Vanishing Heirlooms sells unique, finely crafted gold-filled jewelry pieces from the 1880s to the 1960s. Charel Kennedy finds these pieces across the country in vintage markets. Each piece is cleaned and then converted to classic necklaces and earrings. Some pieces, however, retain their original form and are given new life! Charel also sells gumbo spoons and serving pieces.
Some of my favorite pieces from Charel are the bangles. I collect antique bangles, and Vanishing Heirlooms always has the most unique, sparkly selection.
Charel initially started her business by selling her pieces on consignment to a gift shop in St. Francisville. Here, she was able to grow her brand and inventory, but she wanted to reach a large customer base. Along the way, she started to join holiday markets like Hollydays, Tinsel & Treasures and Market on the Mill. Restoring each piece is a labor of love, but being able to meet so many customers makes it all worth it!
Charel told me about one of her fondest memories with a customer at a holiday market. This older lady had approached her about a cameo the Vanishing Heirlooms collection had, telling Charel that she used to have one when she was a young girl, but had since lost it. After pondering the purchase for a few hours, the older lady came back to booth to purchase the cameo. In this moment, Charel really realized "the personal attraction of these timeless works of art."
Charel's entrepreneurial spirit is inspired by her parents, who owned and operated a country store in Grangeville, LA. Growing up, she learned the value of customer service and hard work. After studying Marketing at LSU, Charel realized how badly she wanted to put her personal stamp on business.
Charel was an avid collector of vintage jewelry and after getting years of compliments on her jewelry, she decided she could start a business and sell the gorgeous pieces she finds to others!
She says "what I found, and now share with my customers, is that antique and vintage jewelry can be timeless, elegant, beautiful - and affordable! These gold-filled pieces are expertly fashioned works of art, crafted with the same skill and attention to detail as jewelry costing thousands of dollars." As a repeat customer of Vanishing Heirlooms, I cannot express how much of bargain these gorgeous, classic pieces are. There is truly a design for everyone!
In 2021, Charel hopes to get back into face-to-face sales. They developed their e-commerce website in 2020, when it became obvious in person sales would not be feasible. The site has become an invaluable asset and allows them to reach customers all over the world!
